Coast Guard suspends search for missing kite surfer

5th Coast Guard District NewsHATTERAS, N.C. — Coast Guard suspended its search Monday at approximately 7:30 p.m., for a 44-year-old male kite surfer missing near Hatteras Island.

Dare County 911 dispatchers contacted the Coast Guard at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday and reported the surfer’s board and kite was located in the shoals without him.

The Coast Guard command center watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched rescue crews from Station Hatteras Inlet and Air Station Elizabeth City who searched approximately 2,542 square miles since Sunday.
