Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Fishermen in Mona Passage

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Coast Guard rescue crews suspended their search at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday for two men who went missing Tuesday while fishing in waters west of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Omar Alan Collazo, 20, and Christian Alvarez Vazquez are still missing after they were expected to return at 5 p.m. Tuesday from the Pichincho or Los Rabos fishing grounds, approximately 40 nautical miles and six nautical miles west of Aguadilla, respectively, but the fishermen never arrived.

Coast Guard rescue crews spent four days conducting 18 searches spanning out more than 20,752 nautical square miles throughout Mona Passage waters.

Since Thursday, Coast Guard rescue crews aggressively searched for Alan Collazo and Alvarez Vazquez with HH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Borinquen, Coast Guard Cutter’s Key Largo and Sapelo, a HU-25 Falcon Jet from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass. and a HC-130 from Air Station Clearwater, Fla.

Coast Guard Cutter’s Key Largo and Sapelo are 110-foot patrol boats homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
