Coast Guard suspends search for missing fisherman in Galveston Bay

HOUSTON — The Coast Guard suspended its search, Thursday, for a man who went missing while fishing in Galveston Bay.

Coast Guard assets began searching for Thein Nguyen, 42, of Anahuac, after he was reported missing Tuesday evening. The Coast Guard searched more than 400 square miles in Trinity Bay, East Bay and Gaveston Bay, in conjuntion with assets from Chambers County Sherriff’s Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Nguyen’s 21-foot White Osprey sport fisher was found approximately 1-mile north of Smith Point, Wednesday, by Texas Parks and Wildlife officials after a good Samaritan located fishing gear that was believed to have belonged to him. Crews from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Department and Dive Team raised the vessel and determined that Nguyen was not aboard.

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) was also issued to mariners as a caution in the area.
