Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Diver

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing diver 18-miles off the coast of Port Canaveral Friday at 10:20 p.m.

John Sansbury, 60, of Winter Garden, Fla., was diving with a friend for lobster when they became separated, and Sansbury’s diving companion resurfaced without him. The man then contacted local authorities stating that Sansbury didn’t resurface.

Coast Guard crews had searched continuously since Thursday afternoon. A total of more than 630-square-miles combined have been searched by all the involved agencies.

A Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral small boat, Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., helicopter, the Coast Guard Cutter Reliance, the Coast Guard Cutter Shrike, an Air Force helicopter, a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office boat, and a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission aircraft have all searched for the missing man for more than 48 combined total hours.

The Coast Guard Cutter Shrike is an 87-foot patrol boat from Port Canaveral, and the Coast Guard Cutter Reliance is a 210-foot medium-endurance cutter from Portsmouth, N.H.
