Coast Guard suspends search for missing diver near Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island, Fla. – The Coast Guard suspended their search for a missing 35-year-old male diver 28-miles west of Anna Maria Island at about 9:34 p.m. Saturday, pending further developments.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Fla., received a call at 9:48 a.m., Saturday, reporting that Ron Wunderlich of Sarasota, Fla., was free-diving at about 115-feet without an emergency breathing apparatus and had not returned to the surface.

A Coast Guard 41-foot rescue boat crew from Station Cortez, Fla., and a Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., searched a 68-square mile area for Wunderlich with negative results.

Three Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission vessels and divers from Sarasota Police Department also assisted in the search for Wunderlich.
