PHILADELPHIA — The Coast Guard suspended its search Saturday for reportedly missing boaters approximately a half mile off the coast of Brigantine, New Jersey.
Coast Guard units searched approximately 196 square miles of ocean during a 22-hour period.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received initial notification Friday at approximately 5:45 p.m. from the Brigantine Police Dept. of three to four people in the water from a capsized fishing boat. There were no correlating reports of missing or overdue boaters in the area.
Units involved in the search included:
- A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Atlantic City
- An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City
- An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina
- The crew of the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Shearwater, homeported in Portsmouth, Virginia
