Coast Guard suspends search for missing boater near Baytown

America's Heartland Coast Guard NewsHOUSTON — Coast Guard crews suspended their search Sunday morning for a man who was ejected from his jon boat in a collision off Roseland Park, near Baytown, Saturday.

The search began after a 17-foot center console boat and a jon boat, with two men aboard, collided around 4:45 p.m., ejecting the men from their jon boat. A Baytown Fire Department crew arrived on scene and rescued one of the men, but was unable to locate the other.

Houston-based Coast Guard crews aboard helicopters and boats have searched for the man along with search crews from the Baytown Police Department, Baytown Fire Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the Harris County Marine Division.

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of the missing person. However, due to the size of the body of water where the incident occurred we do not believe that any further searches would increase our probability of locating the missing person,” said Lt. Spencer Roach, the command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston. “The Coast Guard has searched with small boats and a helicopter for roughly 17 hours.”
