Coast Guard suspends search for missing boater

BALTIMORE – The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing 26-year-old man in the Chesapeake Bay near Elm’s Beach in St. Mary’s County Sunday after a canoe reportedly capsized with two people aboard approximately 500 yards away from shore.

Missing is Oscar Vonilla, 26, of Riverdale, Md.

The Coast Guard suspended its search at 12:54 p.m., after searching approximately 50 square nautical miles last night and this morning.

One of the two people were able to swim back to shore.

A HH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., a 41-foot Utility boatcrew from Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes, Md., along with Maryland Natural Resources Police and St. Mary’s County Fire Rescue completed a first light search starting at 7:44 a.m.

The Dolphin aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City searched until 11:23 p.m., Saturday meanwhile a 41-foot Utility boatcrew from Station St. Inigoes searched through the night.

A 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station St. Inigoes, the Dolphin aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City, Maryland Natural Resources Police, St. Mary’s County Fire Rescue and a Maryland State Police helicopter searched Saturday evening.
