MANNS HARBOR, N.C. – The Coast Guard suspended their search at sunset Tuesday for a construction worker who fell from Old Manns Harbor Bridge near Dare County Regional Airport.
The man was reported to have been working on painting the bottom of the bridge when he fell into the water at about 8 a.m. Tuesday. Another worker jumped into the water after him, but was unable to recover him. He reported to have seen the other worker go under and not resurface.
Coast Guard crews worked alongside other agencies with the Dare County Incident Command to search for the man. The Coast Guard suspended their search after searching 11.5 hours and covering more than 300 square miles.
Crews that have searched for the man include the following:
- An MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City
- Station Oregon Inlet’s 47-foot rescue boat, 25-foot rescue boat and 21-foot rescue boat crews
- A Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crew
- Three Dare County emergency fire and rescue boat crews
- One North Carolina Marine Patrol boat crew
- Two volunteer fire fighter boat crews
- A Dare County Fire Department dive team
The Coast Guard search is suspended pending further developments.
