CLEVELAND – The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a man missing in the water near Cleveland Browns Stadium after it was reported he went swimming off his vessel and did not surface at approximately 2 p.m., July 24, 2010.
The search was suspended at approximately 2:10 p.m., July 25, 2010.
The Coast Guard, along with the Rocky River Police Department and Cleveland Fire Department, searched for over 24 hours across and area of approximately 98 square miles, but were unable to locate the man.
The Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor launched a 25-foot Response Boat-Small (RB-S) and a 41-foot Utility Boat (UTB), and Coast Guard Air Station Detroit launched two HH-65 Dolphin helicopters during the search.
A Canadian Coast Guard Griffon helicopter also aided in the search.
The Coast Guard suspends a search and rescue case with extremely great care and deliberation. After a probable search area is saturated several times with a maximum number of assets, resources and crew effort, and persons in distress are still not located, a decision is made to suspend a case.
The Coast Guard can resume a search if credible information is received that persons reported missing have survived.
