Coast Guard suspends search for man missing near Southport, NC

5th Coast Guard District NewsWILMINGTON, N.C. – The Coast Guard suspended its search for a man who fell from the Southport municipal pier in Southport, N.C., Monday.

At approximately 6 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Oak Island received a call from Brunswick County 911 stating that a man had fallen from the pier to the waters of the Cape Fear River.

Station Oak Island launched a crew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small and a crew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to assist in the search.

Multiple rescue crews searched approximately 19 square miles over a 4-hour period.

Participating in the search were crews from Oak Island Water Rescue, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, Bald Head Island Water Rescue, Southport Rescue Squad, Southport Police Department, Southport Fire and Rescue and the Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point Fire Department’s Dive Rescue and Recovery Team.
