Coast Guard Suspends Search for Kayaker Missing Off Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for the missing kayaker at 10 a.m. today. Two kayakers fell into the water Sunday after their kayak capsized off of Ferland Point in the Santa Barbara Channel.

One of the two kayakers is known to have made it to shore. The empty kayak washed up yesterday at Finney Beach. The missing kayaker is a 24-year-old man from Santa Ana, Calif.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 47-foot Surf Boat from Station Channel Islands Harbor were dispatched and searched the waters between Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department searched by helicopter until sunset Sunday and again Monday morning.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to have the required safety equipment and to exercise good judgment while on the water. Boaters are encouraged to ensure they have properly fitting, Coast Guard approved lifejackets onboard.
