HONOLULU – A Coast Guard Air Station Barber’s Point C-130 Hercules search plane crew and a HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew have suspended their search off the north shore of Kauai for a missing swimmer late Monday night pending the development of new information.
The Coast Guard and Kauai Fire Department assets have been vigorously searching for a missing swimmer after becoming in distress near Kilauea Point, Kauai. The Coast Guards unit’s efforts covered an area roughly the size of Molokai completing four separate flights adding up to roughly 26 hours of flight time.
“Suspending the search for a person is never an easy decision,” said Cmdr. Barry Compagnoni, the acting response division chief. “We discussed all that we did and why we came to the decision with the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this time. We always want to have a successful outcome in a search and reunite loved ones; unfortunately that didn’t happen in this particular case.”
