Coast Guard suspends search for boater off Helms Cove, N.J. after body found

PHILADELPHIA –The Coast Guard suspended their search for a missing boater after a Penns Grove Police Department officer conducting a shore patrol reported discovering a body, later identified by police, to be the missing individual, off Helms Cove New Jersey, at approximately 11 p.m., Sunday.

“Our condolences go out to the loved ones of this individual during this difficult time,” said Chief Warrant Officer Jacob Gerasimof, a command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “It’s truly sad, as a first responder, when cases end tragedy.”

The Coast Guard responded to the report of an overturned boat at 2:17 p.m., Sunday.

Coast Guard assets involved in the search include a 29-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Philadelphia and an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City to aid in the search.
