Coast Guard suspends search for 19 -year-old man

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After a two-day effort, the Coast Guard has suspended its active search today at 9 p.m. for Michael Moxley, the 19-year-old man who went missing south of the Packery Channel jetties late Friday afternoon.

Coast Guard crews searched more than 87 square miles, including overlapping searches, multiple shoreline searches, and nearby oil rigs, along the Padre Island coast and into the Gulf of Mexico.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi received a phone call at 5:42 p.m. Friday from the Corpus Christi Police Department reporting a group of four people were swept off the southern jetty of Packery Channel by a wave. Three people were recovered and the last person was unable to be located.

Coast Guard crews involved in the search included three HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crews from Air Station Corpus Christi, the crew of the cutter Steelhead from Station Port Aransas, and security patrol crews on the beach.
