A member of the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Strike Team is assisting the Environmental Protection Agency at an abandoned scrap metal facility Tuesday in Newburgh, N.Y.

The Strike Team member is performing air and particulate monitoring as well as site safety and contractor monitoring at the abandoned facility where more than seven acres of soil has been contaminated with lead and cadmium. Cleanup operations will involve the removal of more than 100,000 tons of contaminated soil and will be filled with non-contaminated soil.
