Coast Guard still seeking comments about Berkley Bridge

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard is accepting comments until Dec. 8 about the operating lift schedule of the Berkley Bridge.

The Fifth Coast Guard District encourages the public to submit their comments in writing to both the Berkley Bridge temporary deviation to the lift schedule and the 3-year proposed rule making via the normal regulatory process.

Comments may be submitted  by visiting and searching with keyword USCG-2009-0754.

For those without access to a computer, comments can be faxed to (202) 493-2251 or sent by mail to:

Commander (dpb)
Fifth Coast Guard District
431 Crawford St.
Portsmouth, VA 23704

The Virginia Department of Transportation is soliciting comments via their own survey.

Independent of the Coast Guard regulatory process, VDOT is collecting comments and has notified the Coast Guard that it will submit the comments to the public record. An early version of the survey implied Coast Guard endorsement, and VDOT has since amended its survey to reflect that it is solely a VDOT effort.

For further questions on this proposed rule or copies of Public Notice 5-1158 which describes the deviation schedule in detail, call Waverly Gregory, bridge administrator for the Fifth Coast Guard District, at (757) 398-6222 or e-mail at
