SAN DIEGO — Senior Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Pelland relieved Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel Sunday as officer in charge of Coast Guard Station San Diego in a change-of-command ceremony at Coast Guard Sector San Diego Wednesday.
During Daniel’s tour of duty in San Diego he oversaw a crew of 30 Coast Guard men and women who patrolled the San Diego area and Southern California waters. Under his command the station conducted more than 1,100 law-enforcement boardings aimed at preventing illicit maritime activity and improving public safety on the water.
Capt. Joseph Buzzella, commander, Coast Guard Sector San Diego, presided over the ceremony.
Sunday’s next assignment will be as the officer in charge of the Coast Guard cutter Crocodle, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Cape May, New Jersey.
Prior to taking command of Station San Diego Pelland served as the officer in charge of Coast Guard Station Houston where he oversaw homeland security, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations for one of the largest petro-chemical ports in the world.
The change-of-command ceremony is a military tradition, conducted in front of the unit’s crew, that formally signifies the transfer of responsibility and authority from an outgoing commander to an incoming commander.
