Coast Guard Station Port O’Connor responds to vessel aground

Coast Guard 8th District NewsPORT O’CONNOR, Texas – Coast Guard Station Port O’Connor responded to a vessel aground with one person aboard, Monday.

A good Samaritan notified the Coast Guard at approximately 6:15 p.m. of a boat in the vicinity of Pass Cavallo that had washed ashore with one person still aboard. The call came over a VHF-Marine band radio. Coast Guard Station Port O’Connor launched a Response Boat-Small and crew, and Air Station Corpus Christi launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and crew.

The RB-S crew arrived on scene around 7 p.m. and found the person to be in good condition and safe. The boat was unable to get underway due to rough surf. The man elected to remain with his vessel, and the case was deferred to commercial salvage.

“Prior to boating, you should always review the weather and ensure your vessel is capable of weathering the elements,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Hernandez, a Station Port O’Connor RB-S coxswain .
