Coast Guard Station New York to host Change of Command ceremony

NEW YORK – The media is invited to attend a Coast Guard Change of Command ceremony at Station New York Saturday Oct. 10, 2009, in Staten Island, N.Y.

Lt. Cmdr Jason C. Aleksak will assume responsibility as commanding officer of Station New York from Lt. Cmdr Richard J. Burke, in a time-honored ceremony that formally transfers authority of command from one individual to another.

Station New York is recognized as the Coast Guard’s busiest station in the nation, with such high profile incidents including rescue operations of Flight 1549 and most recently the plane and helicopter collision over the Hudson River that occurred August 8, 2009. The Station’s operating area includes the waters of New York Harbor, the waterways around Staten Island, the Port of Newark and Elizabeth, the East River, the lower Hudson River, Jamaica Bay and a portion of the lower New York Harbor below the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
