Coast Guard Station Montauk commander temporarily relieved of duty

NEW YORK–The Officer in Charge of Coast Guard Station Montauk was temporarily relieved of command today.

Rear Adm. Joe Nimmich, the commander of the First Coast Guard District, conducted the relief due to a loss of confidence in Chief Petty Officer James Weber’s ability to command the unit following a dangerous heavy weather training evolution that violated Coast Guard policy.

Capt. Daniel Ronan, Sector Long Island Sound commander and Captain of the Port of Long Island Sound, initiated the investigation of the incident and made the recommendation for relief.

Until a permanent decision is made, Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Guthlein will temporarily assume the position of Commanding Officer of Station Montauk.
