Coast Guard Station Mayport boatcrew rescues 2 kayakers in St. Johns River

d7ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – A  boatcrew from Coast Guard  Station Mayport, Florida, rescued two people who were standing on top of their overturned fishing kayak in the St. Johns River near Mayport Wednesday night.

No injuries have been reported, and both kayakers were wearing their lifejackets.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville command center received a call at 8:22 p.m. from a good Samaritan who spotted the pair from shore.

The Station Mayport boatcrew immediately launched, brought both people aboard the Coast Guard vessel then brought them and their kayak to the Coast Guard base where they declined medical treatment.

“These kayakers did the right thing by wearing their life jackets and standing on top of their overturned boat while they waited for help,” said Lt. j.g. John Paul Monreal-Berner, Sector Jacksonville command duty officer. “Boaters who stay with overturned vessels are much easier for rescuers or other nearby boaters to see than those who try to swim to safety.”
