Coast Guard Station Marblehead rescues 2 after boat sinks near their station

CLEVELAND – The Coast Guard rescued two people from Lake Erie after their 17-foot boat sank about 500 yards from the Coast Guard Station in Marblehead.

At 12:45 p.m., a Coast Guard boat crew, from Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, was preparing to get underway for a patrol when they witnessed a boat sink 500 yards from the station. They also witnessed two people with life jackets on enter the water. Waves at the time were reported to be 3-4 feet.

The boat crew immediately got underway aboard a 45-foot response boat and rescued the two people. Both people were transported to Station Marblehead. Neither needed medical attention.

The owners of the capsized boat contacted a commercial salvage company to salvage the boat. No signs of pollution were reported.
