NEW YORK – The Coast Guard conducted an emergency medical evacuation of an ill tug vessel crewman, one mile east of Fire Island Inlet, N.Y., today.

Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center personnel received a report from a member aboard the tug vessel Treasure Coast that a crewman had a medical emergency and was in need of immediate medical attention.

After conferring with the Coast Guard duty flight surgeon, it was deemed the best course of action would be to conduct the medevac via a Coast Guard small boat.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island arrived on scene with the tug vessel, which was transiting inbound near the Fire Island Inlet sea buoy approximately one mile from Fire Island Inlet.

The ill crewman was transferred off the tugboat onto the Station’s 25-foot Response Boat- Small where he was administered basic first aid during the transit back to the station.

Emergency medical service met the crew at the pier and transferred the ill crewman to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, N.Y.
