Coast Guard Station Chincoteague Rescues Boaters

PORTSMOUTH, VA. – A 23-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Chincoteague, Va., rescued two mariners in distress in the midst of poor weather conditions today

A call for assistance came into Accomack County, Va., emergency services at approximately 4:55 p.m., reporting a disabled boat and Jet Ski in Chincoteague Bay just north of the Greenbackville, Va., harbor. Station Chincoteague launched a rescue craft in conjunction with a 27-foot Virginia Marine Police boat.

Upon arriving on-scene, the operator informed the crew that his brother had drifted away on a jet ski. The boat crews located the Jet Ski with out the operator onboard. After a shoreline search for the Jet Ski, the boat crews found the operator floating in the water.

The crews rescued both men and delivered them to Greenbackville Harbor where local emergency services personnel transported the Jet Ski operator to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., for further evaluation.

Mariners are reminded to wear life jackets while on the water, check the pending weather conditions prior to boating, and file a float plan with a family or friends detailing where you intend to operate and what time you anticipate returning.
