BLOCK ISLAND, R.I. — Coast Guard Station Block Island, a seasonal station in Narragansett, Rhode Island, officially opened Friday for the summer boating season.

Station Block Island, under the parent command of Coast Guard Station Point Judith in Narragansett, will have a boat and crew ready to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

During the winter, the station, which covers Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and offshore waters up to 50 miles south of Rhode Island, closes due to low mariner traffic. Coast Guard Station Point Judith covers this area during the winter.

Mariners within Block Island Sound are reminded to report all maritime emergencies to the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Command Center using VHF-FM radio channel 16 or by calling 508-457-3211.
