BOSTON — Coast Guard Station Block Island, Rhode Island conducted its annual closure Wednesday and will reopen next Memorial Day weekend for the 2017 summer boating season.
The unit closes each year due to reduced boating traffic during the winter. Coast Guard Station Point Judith, its parent command, will assume duty for all responses in the area.
Station Point Judith is located about 12 miles north of Block Island and provides search and rescue assets for Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and offshore emergencies up to 50 miles south of Rhode Island.
Mariners within Block Island Sound are reminded to report all marine emergencies to Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England using VHF-FM radio channel 16 or by calling (508) 457-3211.
