NEW YORK – A 500-yard security zone will be established around vessels participating the the week-long salute to the Navy Great White Fleet from Oct. 10 to Oct. 14, 2008.
The security zone around the Dutch submarine Walrus will will be enforced from Ambrose Channel to Pier 74 North in Brooklyn, N.Y. from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008.
The security zone around the Nassau will be enforced from Ambrose Channel to Pier 88 North from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and the security zone around the Italian submarine Salvatore Todaro will be enforced from Ambrose Channel to Pier 90 South from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.
An established security zone will be in effect around both Pier 88 and Pier 90 for the duration of the vessels’ stay.
“We’re providing a boost in security by assisting Coast Guard Station New York,” said Lt.j.g. Mark Kurczewski, the team leader for the Marine Safety and Security Team from Boston, Mass. “Our job is to protect these highly valuable U.S. Navy and foreign navy assets as they travel through New York Harbor.”
No civilian craft will be allowed to enter the security zone without permission from the Coast Guard, who can be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 13.
Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service will coordinate commercial traffic advisories and pass information over channel 14.
