Coast Guard sets safety zone on Mississippi River

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to establish a safety zone on the Mississippi River, Saturday and Sunday, for construction on the Huey P. Long Bridge.

The safety zone will be located on the lower Mississippi River at mile marker 106.1 at the bridge site.

The following is the schedule for full or partial closures:

On Saturday, there will be a Main Navigation Channel closure from 5:30 a.m., to 7 a.m.

The Alternate Channel will remain open during this time.

There will be a full river closure, Saturday, scheduled for 7 a.m., to 3 p.m.

There will be a Main Navigation Channel closure from 3 p.m., to 12 a.m.

The Alternate Channel will remain open during this time.

On Sunday, there will be a Main Navigation Channel closure from 12 a.m., to 4 p.m.

The Alternate Channel will remain open during this time.

There will be a full river closure, Sunday, scheduled for 4 p.m., to 8 p.m.

There will be a Main Navigation Channel closure from 8 p.m., to 12 a.m.

The Alternate Channel will remain open during this time.

On Nov. 22, 2010, there will be a Main Navigation Channel closure from 12 a.m., to 5:30 a.m. The Alternate Channel will remain open during this time.

On Nov. 23, 2010, there will be a Main Navigation Channel closure from 7 a.m., to 7 p.m., with an alternate/back-up date of Nov. 24, 2010.

Mariners shall not enter into, depart from, or move within the safety zone unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port New Orleans or a designated representative. All concerned mariners may contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM Channel 16 and the Vessel Traffic Center at 504-365-2230.
