HOUSTON – The Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Galveston conducted a vertical insertion and full capability exercise onboard the Coast Guard Cutter Harry Claiborne in Galveston, Texas, late Thursday afternoon.

Vertical insertion is when boarding team members slide down a rope from a helicopter, hovering 30-40 feet, to a ship. This capability allows teams to board ships farther out at sea, on short notice and is easier and safer than boarding by small boat in rough seas.

In addition to the semi-annual re-certification of the teams vertical insertion training, they also exercised their ability to secure a ship. Team members used modified weapons and engaged in fire-fights with role players firing paint-tipped bullets, called simulated ammunitions.

<div adrtrgt-cont=
