SAULT STE MARIE, Michigan – The Coast Guard presented members of the National Park Service in Isle Royale, Minnesota, with a lifesaving award Tuesday.

Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie Chief of Response Cmdr. Carolyn Moberley presented the Capt. David P. Dobbins Award to Isle Royale National Park Superintendent Phyllis Green, on behalf of the National Park Service members in Ilse Royale, for their efforts which lead to the rescue of two girls July 2016.

The Capt. David P. Dobbins Award recognizes outstanding action accomplished while conducting a search and rescue mission on the Great Lakes. It links the outstanding performance of today to the heritage of Dobbins, the first superintendent of the U. S. Lifesaving Service’s Great Lakes 9th District in 1876.

On July 9, 2016, Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie received notification of two girls who sustained possible spinal cord injuries after a tree fell on them at Hatchet Lake Campground. The National Park Service was notified and conducted a medical evacuation when the Isle Royale park service team quickly responded, dispatching more than 20 rangers from across the island to assist, resulting in the girls’ safe transport to higher-level medical care.

“This crew demonstrated incredible initiative, resourcefulness, and persistence, upholding the legacy of Capt. Dobbins,” said Moberly.
