On June 29, 2011, Capt. James Whitehead will assume the responsibility of commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston from Capt. Marcus Woodring. Rear Adm. Roy Nash, commander of the Eighth Coast Guard District, will preside over the ceremony.
Woodring was assigned commander of Sector Houston-Galveston in June 2009, after serving two years as the deputy commander. He will retire and enter the private sector upon his relief.
Whitehead, a 1987 graduate of the Coast Guard Officer Candidate School, has served the past two years as the deputy commander under Woodring.
When asked what he would like to be remembered for, Woodring replied:
“Impacting the lives of others, and sharing the knowledge I’ve gained over the years,” said Woodring. “Making a drug bust is exciting and impactful, but sitting with a young person and providing mentoring will have a lasting impression long after I’m gone.”
