CHARLESTON, S.C. — Members of Coast Guard Sector Charleston, along with port partners, are scheduled to host an open house Saturday, May 18th to celebrate the kickoff for National Safe Boating Week (NSBW).
The open house is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This free event is an opportunity for the public to learn about potentially life-saving boating, kayaking and canoeing safety information, as well as to tour Coast Guard facilities and various Coast Guard boats stationed in their community.
The open house will include a historic walking tour of the location, tours of Coast Guard small boats and cutters, a helicopter search and rescue demonstration and safe boating educational displays.
If boaters wish to have any safety equipment inspected, they may bring it with them. The boating public can also take this opportunity to schedule a free vessel safety check, courtesy of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel will also assist in demonstrating how to properly use equipment.
NSBW is a week-long annual campaign for the Coast Guard and port partners to emphasize the importance of safe boating practices and the use of boating safety equipment. NSBW lasts from May 18-24.
