Coast Guard Sector Baltimore holds change of command ceremony

Mid Atlantic Coast Guard NewsBALTIMORE — The crew of Coast Guard Sector Baltimore held a change of command ceremony at the Baltimore Cruise Terminal here, Thursday.

During the ceremony, Capt. Mark O’Malley relinquished command of the sector and its crew to Capt. Kevin Kiefer.

Kiefer recently served as the chief of the Office of Port and Facility Compliance at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for implementing Maritime Transportation Safety Act regulations nationwide.

As the commander of the sector, Kiefer will serve as the Captain of the Port, federal maritime security coordinator, the officer in charge of marine inspections for the Sector Baltimore marine inspections zone, search and rescue mission coordinator and maritime federal on scene coordinator.

The change of command ceremony is a formal naval tradition, which includes the transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another.
