Coast Guard searching Little Sodus Bay for missing man

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND — U.S. Coast Guard boat and air crews are searching Little Sodus Bay, N.Y., and Lake Ontario for a 21-year-old man last seen leaving a waterfront tavern in Sodus Point, N.Y., about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Missing is George Heinz, 21.

A relative notified search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo, N.Y., Heinz was missing at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Heinz’s wallet and keys were found on a dock near the tavern and his vehicle was found in the parking lot. It is unknown if he entered the water.

Sector SAR controllers dispatched a boatcrew in a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Sodus Point and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit.

Also assisting with the search are a boatcrew in an RB-S from Coast Guard Station Oswego, N.Y., and Canadian coast guard aircrews in a C-130 Hercules plane and a Griffon helicopter.

Boat and aircrews searched through the night and are continuing to search for any signs of Heinz. Additionally, Wayne County sheriffs established an incident command post near the tavern and are using divers to search the waters there.

The water temperature is 74 degrees. Waves in the area are about 1 foot.
