Coast Guard searching Kennebec River for missing boater

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Coast Guard crews and other agencies are searching the Kennebec River for a man who may have fallen off his boat near Georgetown Island, Maine, April 7, 2011.

A Maine Marine Patrol aircrew spotted a 16-18 foot aluminum skiff circling near Perkins Ledge with no one aboard and notified the Coast Guard around 1:15 p.m.

A Coast Guard Station Boothbay Harbor 25-foot boat crew, a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Maine Marine Patrol, Maine State Police and other local emergency response crews are searching between Phippsburg, Maine, and Popham Beach State Park at the mouth of the Kennebec River for the Phippsburg man.

The Coast Guard Cutter Jefferson Island is expected to join the search around 10 p.m.

Family members last saw the man around noon when he was getting underway from Phippsburg.

Currently there is good visibility with light winds. The air is 42 degrees and water 40 degrees.

The Coast Guard crews plan to search throughout the night.
