Coast Guard Searching for Two Sailors Missing off Bermuda

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard is continuing its search for two sailors who went missing in a storm packing 40-knot winds and seas of more than 30-feet last night, 270 miles north of Bermuda.

Coast Guard rescue crews onboard an HH-60 helicopter and three C-130 aircraft from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and an HU-25 Falcon jet from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., have joined the motor vessel Martorell, a 645-foot Panamanian flagged Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) vessel in searching for the missing sailors.

The missing sailors, onboard the 42-foot sailboat Albatross, were sailing from Long Island, N.Y., to Bermuda, were trying to transfer from their sailboat to the Martorell in heavy seas when they entered the water.

The storm has calmed since last night and the weather on scene is winds of 17-knots and seas between 10 and 13-feet.

Both sailors were reportedly wearing life jackets when they entered the water.
