Coast Guard searching for two people after vessel capsizes near Rockaways, N.Y

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard is searching for two people after a vessel reportedly capsized in the Rockaways near Queens, N.Y., today around 10 a.m.

Students at Beach Channel High School contacted authorities after allegedly watching a vessel carrying two people capsize in Jamaica Bay.

Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station New York are on scene and have located a capsized 10-foot white and green flat bottom boat. The crews also located a capsized white and blue vessel in the vicinity that was determined to be derelict after marine growth was discovered on it.

“We do not know if the second craft is significant at this time,” said Lt. Brandon Link, Coast Guard Sector New York’s command duty officer. “A rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City is on scene conducting aerial searches while we also try to locate these missing people via surface assets.”

The New York City Fire Department and New York City Police Department aviation units are also assisting in the search.

No details are available about the missing mariners at this time.
