Coast Guard Searching for Two Fisherman Near Aguadilla

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Coast Guard and Puerto Rico Police rescue crews are searching for two fishermen Thursday who are overdue from a fishing trip Tuesday in waters west of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Omar Alan Collazo, 20, and Christian Alvarez Vazquez are missing after they were expected to return from their fishing trip at 5 p.m. Tuesday, but the fishermen never arrived.

Collazo and Alvarez reportedly departed Crash Boat Beach, Aguadilla aboard a 20-foot-white EduardoƱo to the Pichincho or Los Rabos fishing grounds, approximately 40 nautical miles and six nautical miles west of Aguadilla, respectively. The fishermen’s boat is powered by one 90-horsepower-outboard engine and reportedly was not equipped with a Global Positioning System onboard.

Coast Guard rescue crews have been aggressively searching for the missing men with HH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla, a HU-25 Falcon Jet from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., an HC-130 aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., and the Coast Guard Cutter Sapelo. So far, Coast Guard rescue crews have conducted five searches to find the missing men spanning over 1,751 nautical square miles.

Coast Guard Cutter Sapelo is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
