Coast Guard searching for three missing boaters

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Coast Guard, along with state and local officials, have been searching for three missing teenage boaters on an 18-foot white flats boat in the vicinity of Pine Island Sound, Fla., since about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach, Fla., received a call from the vessel owner at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday reporting that the boys were overdue from a boating and camping trip on North Captiva Island, Fla. The three boys, whose identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, took the vessel Thursday from Pineland, Fla., to North Captiva Island and were scheduled to return home Saturday before dark.

A Coast Guard Station Ft. Myers Beach rescue boat crew and a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater rescue helicopter crew, along with units from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and North Captiva Fire and Rescue, are searching the area for the three missing boaters.
