Coast Guard searching for possible missing boater off South Jersey

5th Coast Guard District News
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Coast Guard is searching for a possible person in the water offshore Avalon, N.J., Friday.

Missing is Vincent Tangorra, 56, from Bethpage, N.Y.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received a report Friday around 11 a.m. from a commercial salvage company that a personal watercraft was adrift off the coast of Cape May, N.J.

A Coast Guard member contacted the brother of the watercraft’s registered owner, who said Tangorra is the owner and operator of the 37-foot sailing vessel Polaris, which was towing the personal watercraft from New York to North Carolina.

He also told the Coast Guard he last spoke with Tangorra Thursday and learned Polaris was experiencing engine trouble.

Using Tangorra’s cell phone location, a 45-foot Response Boat — Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May, arrived on scene with the Polaris, which was adrift about nine miles offshore from Avalon, and found no one aboard.

Searching for Tangorra are:

  • A 45-foot RB-M crew from Station Cape May
  • Two MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City
  • The crew of the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ibis, homeported in Cape May
