Coast Guard searching for overdue windsurfer on Banana River

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coast Guard and Brevard County Sherriff’s Office are searching for an overdue windsurfer on the Banana River near Merritt Island, Fla.

Missing is Christopher Slaughter, 65, of Ocala, Fla.

The Coast Guard was notified at 7:50 a.m. Monday by Slaughter’s wife who reported him overdue. Slaughter departed from a ramp at Kelly Park in Merritt Island, a well known location for windsurfing. Slaughter is reported to have a white surfboard and white sail. It was reported that he had a black wetsuit when he departed.

A HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., a 25-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Canaveral, Fla., and a Brevard County Sherriff’s Office helicopter air crew are responding.
