Coast Guard searching for overdue kayaker off Rincon, Puerto Rico

Coast Guard Cutter VigilantSAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Coast Guard and local agency rescue crews are searching Friday for an overdue kayaker off Puerto Rico.

Missing is Josh Kaufman, 25, a resident of Fla. visiting his family in Puerto Rico, who was last seen at 2p.m. Thursday going out on a green kayak from “Punta Rincon” and was reported to be wearing black swim trunks and not wearing a life jacket.

Coast Guard Sector San Juan watchstanders received the report of an overdue kayaker from a 911 emergency dispatcher at approximately 6:18 p.m. Thursday, and issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast for boaters and mariners in the area to be on the lookout.

A Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was launched to search for Kaufman.

Other assets actively participating in the search include:

  • U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant
  • Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action air and surface assets
  • Puerto Rico Emergency Management Agency land-based rescue crews.

Boaters are encouraged to remain vigilant while in the area and to render aid and assistance if necessary. Anyone with information on the location of the missing kayaker is encouraged to contact Sector San Juan Command Center at (787) 289-2041 or on the radio at VHF-FM marine radio channel-16.
