Coast Guard searching for overdue boater

MOBILE, Ala. – The Coast Guard is searching for a man who was reported missing from his 21-foot crab boat late Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, in the vicinity of Fowl River in Mobile Bay.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a call at approximately 5:30 p.m. from a family friend reporting that Sonphan Souwanham, 40, had not returned home at his scheduled time after crab fishing.

Sector Mobile launched a HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter and crew from Aviation Training Center in Mobile, a 41-foot utility boat and crew from Station Dauphin Island and a HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans to search Monday night.

The Coast Guard is continuing the search today  with an HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans and a 25-foot rescue boat crew form Station Dauphin Island. An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) was also issued to mariners as a caution in the area.

Also assisting in the search are the Alabama Marine Police and the Mobile Sheriff’s Flotilla.
