Coast Guard searching for overdue boater

KEY WEST, Fla. – Coast Guard crews are searching for an overdue boater Sunday after he failed to return from his fishing trip early last week.

Dorel Zafiu, a 44-year-old male, departed Sombrero Resort in Marathon, Fla. on Monday and was only supposed to be out for a couple of days.

The dockmaster at Sombrero Resort reported Zafiu missing and said that Zafiu usually fishes on his 24-foot Monterey cuddy cabin in an area gulf-side between Big Pine Key, Fla., and Marathon. Zafiu told the dockmaster that he was going to be gone for a couple of days before he left on Monday.

Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office personnel have been attempting to locate Zafiu throughout the day but all efforts thus far have been unsuccessful.

The Coast Guard is searching for Zafiu tonight with a HU-25 Falcon jet from Coast Guard Air Station Miami.

If anyone has any information on Zafiu they are asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Key West search-and-rescue coordinators at 305-295-9700.
