NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is searching for a motorist who drove a vehicle off of the Claiborne Avenue Bridge and into the Industrial Canal, Wednesday.
At approximately 3:10 p.m., Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report that a motorist drove a vehicle off of the bridge and into the canal. Coast Guard Station New Orleans launched a 25-foot response boat and crew and is currently searching for the individual. The Coast Guard has also issued a safety zone restricting vessel traffic from entering the Industrial Canal within 500 yards to the north and south of the bridge.
The Army Corps of Engineers is sending a survey boat to locate the submerged vehicle and the New Orleans Police Department is investigating the cause of the incident.
