Coast Guard searching for missing swimmer near Ashley River Bridge in Charleston, S.C.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard and Charleston City police are searching for a missing swimmer near the Route 17 Bridge which spans over the Ashley River Wednesday.

Missing is Jackie L. Washington, 22, from Charleston.

The Coast Guard was notified at approximately 11:30 p.m., Tuesday, that Washington and two men jumped off the Route 17 Bridge over the Ashley River in Charleston. Two of the three men swam to a local dock. Washington failed to make it to shore and was last seen treading water south of the Ashley River Bridge near the James Island Connector.

The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Charleston and an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Facility Charleston. In addition, rescue boat crews from South Carolina Department of Natural Resources are also on scene.
