Coast Guard searching for missing person near Surf City, N.C.

SURF CITY, N.C. – The Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Surf City Fire and Rescue are searching for a missing swimmer near the Surf City pier Saturday night.

The Fire and Rescue crew saw a swimmer struggling in the water about 200 yards from the pier, lost sight of the person and called the Coast Guard for help at about 8 p.m.

Searching are crews aboard Station Wrightsville Beach 41-foot and 25-foot rescue boats, an Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter, Marine Corps Cherry Point’s Pedro helicopter and Surf City Fire and Rescue’s all terrain vehicle.

Anyone missing a friend or family member who went swimming in the area should contact Coast Guard Sector North Carolina at 252-247-4570.
