CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard is searching for a man who went missing off the coast of Mustang Island, approximately 3 miles south of the Port Aransas Jetties, Sunday.
Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi watchstanders received a report from the Port Aransas Police Department at approximately 2:50 p.m., that four men had gone swimming in the area. Two men safely returned to shore, and the remaining two required assistance.
A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and crew were launched from Coast Guard Station Port Aransas at 2:55 p.m. Rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi conducted multiple searches with both the HU-25 Falcon jet and MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter.
The Port Aransas Police Department recovered one man, who was unresponsive.
“We are saturating a search area 14 miles by 4.5 miles wide along the shore of Mustang Island with assets both on the surface and in the air,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Griffin, a watchstander at Sector Corpus Christi. “Coast Guard crews are working closely with the local agencies on scene as the search efforts continue.”
Port Aransas Fire Department Beach Rescue is also assisting in the search.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
