Coast Guard searching for missing NC boater

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard and Currituck Sheriff’s Office are searching for a missing boater after a vessel was found unmanned in Tulls Bay, N.C., Sunday evening.

Missing is Roland Halstead, 52, the operator of the vessel.

Sector North Carolina watchstanders received a report, at 7:30 p.m., from Currituck 911 dispatch reporting an abandoned 18-foot vessel with its motor idling and not anchored.

A rescue boat crew from Station Elizabeth City arrived to investigate and located a dog bowl on board and a small dog in a nearby marsh. An MH-60T Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City arrived to assist in the search for Halstead, who was reported to have gone out earlier Sunday.
